Unidentified accused contacted the complainant on the phone and claimed that a SIM card had been purchased using his Aadhaar card, according to the FIR registered at Cidco police station. Under this pressure, they instructed him to transfer money to a bank account provided by them for verification, an officer from Cidco police said. Police said it is a typical case of digital arrest fraud, where fraudsters impersonate as law enforcement or bank officials, allege misuse of identity documents and put victims under video surveillance to extort money.
They further alleged that a bank account had been opened in his name at Canara Bank in Mumbai, in which crores of rupees had been deposited and used for terrorist activities. The accused allegedly impersonated police officers, kept the complainant under constant watch through video calls and created fear of arrest. Later, when he realised that he had been cheated, he approached the Cyber police station. Following a preliminary inquiry, the complaint was transferred to Cidco police station for further action.
