Ahmedabad : Three men allegedly posing as helpful strangers cheated a 69-year-old woman of gold jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh near Bageshri Crossroads in Satellite on Sunday morning after convincing her to remove her ornaments for safekeeping.
Sunita Garg left her Ramdevnagar residence around 7.15am to visit a temple and later went for a walk, according to a police complaint. At around 8am, as she reached Bageshri Crossroads, a man aged between 30 and 35 approached her and led her to another man seated on a motorcycle.
The two allegedly told Garg that an incident had taken place in the area the previous night and advised her to remove her gold chain and bangles and keep them in her bag for safety. Police said he allegedly took the bag and ornaments, switched them with a substitute bangle wrapped in paper and returned the packet to her. Believing them, Garg removed her jewellery and placed it in her bag. One of the accused then offered to wrap the bangles in paper and keep them safely. After returning home, she checked her bag and found her gold chain missing. When she opened the paper packet, she discovered a bangle made of another metal in place of her gold jewellery.
