Police said the family was waiting at the Sillamarathupatti bus shelter to travel to a Perumal temple in Kombai on the fifth Saturday of the Tamil month of Purattasi. The bus driver and conductor fled the scene, police said. The town bus, travelling from Bodinayakanur towards Uthamapalayam, allegedly went out of the driver’s control and hit the three. It then rammed into a tea stall, a fish shop and an ATM centre before crashing into a roadside tree. The bodies were sent for postmortem examination. The accident triggered a road blockade by villagers, who alleged that repeated demands for speed breakers along the stretch had gone unheeded. They withdrew the protest after police assured them that appropriate measures would be taken. Download the TOI App.
