The 107-year-old Shri Katra Durga Puja Barwari
The 107-year-old Shri Katra Durga Puja Barwari is among the prominent organisers following this approach, using natural materials for everything from idol-making to serving bhog. Stay updated with the latest Prayagraj news.
Principal secretary of the barwari, Abhinn Varshney, said the framework of Goddess Durga and other idols has been prepared with bamboo, wood and jute ropes, while clay from Ganga riverbank has been used for moulding. Varshney said the effort was aimed at keeping the celebrations rooted in tradition while reducing their environmental footprint, particularly during idol immersion. Prayagraj : Eco-friendly puja practices are becoming a trend in the city with an increasing number of Durga Puja organisers opting for biodegradable material for pandal decoration and other puja articles. Straw, hay and natural jute fibres are mixed with the clay to strengthen the idols and prevent cracks. The idols have been painted using natural colours. The organisers this year have completely avoided plaster of Paris (POP), which can contribute to pollution after immersion. And instead of synthetic harmful colours, the idols were painted with organic, herbal and water-based colours like ochre, turmeric, charcoal and colours derived from natural fruits. Even the decorative material has been selected keeping the environment in mind. Shola, natural paper, eco-friendly fabrics and other sustainable materials have replaced plastic and thermocol-based decorations. The eco-friendly approach continues in the distribution of bhog too. Food and water are served in traditional leaf plates, leaf bowls and earthen kulhads, reducing the use of plastic and disposable material. Download the TOI App.
