Ahmedabad: A university based in Rajkot is facing allegations of violating state fee regulations by overcharging diploma and BTech students for the past three years.
A formal complaint lodged with Gujarat’s Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC) accuses the institution of collecting fees substantially higher than the rates approved under the Gujarat Professional Technical Educational Institutions Act, 2007. The FRC-approved annual fee for diploma courses is Rs 57,000, but the university has allegedly been charging Rs 80,000, resulting in an excess collection of Rs 23,000 per student annually, according to the complaint. Similarly, the approved annual fee for BTech courses is Rs 95,000, whereas the institution has reportedly been collecting Rs 1.3 lakh, marking an additional charge of Rs 35,000 per student each year.
The complainant has demanded an immediate investigation, the formation of an inquiry committee, and a full refund of the excess fees with 12% interest. Penalties for violations range from two to 10 times the excess amount collected, and authorities can initiate proceedings that could lead to the cancellation of an institution’s recognition. The complaint also warns that an agitation will be launched if the demands are not met.
