Durga Puja is that time of the year when colourful sarees, beautiful jewellery and traditional outfits come out in full force.
The 2026 celebrations mark its 80th year, with the pandal’s theme reported to be inspired by Kerala’s famous Guruvayur Temple. At Mumbai’s North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Juhu, Kajol arrived with daughter Nysa Devgn, while Alia Bhatt and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali also came to seek Maa Durga’s blessings. Orry was spotted at the celebrations, too, and his festive look with Nysa caught attention. From Kajol’s yellow saree to Alia’s pink-and-blue combination, there was plenty of colour at the Mahanavami celebrations this year. And the best part? You don’t need a designer wardrobe to take inspiration from these looks. Kajol went with a classic saree for her visit, but it was the colour combination that made the outfit stand out. She wore a mustard-yellow chiffon saree with delicate zari work along the borders. The fabric looked light and easy to carry, while the traditional drape gave the outfit a festive feel. She paired it with a blue V-neck blouse, and the contrast between the two colours worked beautifully. Her accessories were just as traditional. Blue glass bangles and jhumka earrings added to the look, while a red bindi brought everything together. Kajol kept her makeup simple with kohl-lined eyes, blushed cheeks and nude lipstick. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail. There’s something lovely about a saree that doesn’t try too hard. Kajol’s look is a good reminder that you can make a simple outfit feel festive with the right blouse, a few pieces of jewellery and a colour combination that works. Alia Bhatt chose a much brighter colour palette for her pandal visit, wearing a fuchsia-pink saree with gold gota patti borders. She draped it in the traditional Bengali style and paired it with a turquoise-blue blouse featuring short puff sleeves and a rounded neckline. The pink and blue combination was hard to miss, but the gold detailing kept the outfit rooted in festive dressing. Alia didn’t go overboard with accessories either. She wore gold jhumkas, stacked bangles, statement rings and ear chains. Her hair was styled in a sleek braided bun, decorated with flowers, while a small bindi and understated makeup completed the look. It’s the sort of saree styling that works if you enjoy wearing bright colours but don’t want to spend hours figuring out how to accessorise them. The blouse does a lot of the work, and the gold jewellery ties everything together. And if you’re bored of matching your blouse to your saree, Alia’s look might just convince you to try something different. Nysa Devgn and Orry kept things more relaxed in yellow kurtas While Kajol and Alia went the saree route. The two friends were spotted twinning in the bright shade at the pandal. Their outfits offered a simpler take on festive dressing, especially for anyone who would rather skip a saree or a heavily embroidered suit. Yellow is an easy colour to wear for daytime celebrations. It looks cheerful, photographs well and doesn’t need much styling. A kurta with a comfortable pair of trousers, simple footwear and a few accessories can be more than enough for a visit to the pandal. Nysa and Orry’s coordinated looks also made a case for keeping festive fashion fun. Not every outfit needs to be elaborate to feel right for the occasion. The celebrations weren’t just about the celebrity outfits. Several familiar faces from the film and television industry visited the North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal to offer prayers. Alia Bhatt and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali were among those who came to seek Maa Durga’s blessings. Alia Bhatt embraced traditional Bengali style in a vibrant fuchsia-pink saree, pairing it with a contrasting blue blouse and a neat bun decorated with flowers. Actors Neetu Chandra and Rupali Ganguly were also spotted at the venue. The pandal has a special connection to Kajol and her family. Organised by the Mukherjee family, it has been part of Mumbai’s Durga Puja celebrations for decades. Kajol regularly attends the festivities, often accompanied by family members, including her mother, veteran actor Tanuja, and sister Tanishaa Mukerji. For many visitors, the annual gathering is as much about family and faith as it is about the festivities around it. The North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja is one of Mumbai’s best-known Durga Puja celebrations, drawing devotees and visitors from across the city. As always, the rituals, decorations and celebrity visits have drawn plenty of attention. But for anyone keeping an eye on festive fashion, the celebrity appearances offered their own share of inspiration. Kajol showed how a yellow saree can look fresh with a blue blouse. Alia went for a bolder pink-and-turquoise pairing, while Nysa and Orry kept things easy in yellow kurtas. (PTI Photo)(PTI10_16_2026_000020A)
