Chennai: In a move to curb corruption and help police stations meet their day-to-day expenses, Tamil Nadu govt has increased the monthly contingency fund for police stations across the state by up to 700%, with allocations ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹50,000. Govt has sanctioned ₹71 crore annually for the revised allocations.
A govt order (GO), classifying police stations into three categories based on the number of reported crimes, increased the contingency funds from ₹3,750 to ₹30,000, ₹6,000 to ₹40,000 and ₹8,250 to ₹50,000 for the three categories. The decision follows an announcement by chief minister C Joseph Vijay during the police department’s demand for grants for 2026-27 in the assembly. The enhanced allocation is intended to enable police stations to meet routine administrative and operational expenses, reducing dependence on unofficial funding sources and preventing corrupt practices.
