Outside Himalaya Mall: The footpath is used as a parking lot

Ahmedabad: A Rs 42.3 crore road development project linking Vastrapur Lake to Himalaya Mall via Sanjeevani Hospital has hit a roadblock, with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) road and building (R&B) committee seeking clarity on its potential impact on stormwater drainage. Sources said the R&B committee had approved a Rs 99.9 crore proposal on July 7, 2025, to develop six roads under the Law Garden and Mithakhali precinct areas. An additional Rs 13 crore was sanctioned towards GST. The project covered 6,680m across six stretches, including roads connecting NCC Chowk to Subhadrapura Junction, Mount Carmel to Jalaram Underpass, GICEA to Panchvati Circle, Mithakhali Circle to Wagh Bakri Tea Lounge, Mount Carmel to Commerce Six Roads, and Shri Virchand Gandhi Chowk to Mithakhali Circle. Sources further said the standing committee approved a Rs 334 crore proposal in March for developing 12 roads under the Sports Precinct Area Development and Education Precinct Area Development projects. ₹112cr road resurfacing proposal returned Ahmedabad: AMC’s R&B committee on Wednesday returned a Rs 112.2 crore proposal for resurfacing roads in Lambha, Indrapuri, Vatva and Khokhra wards in South Zone after finding that the quoted rates were 29% above the estimated cost.

R&B committee chairman Jainik Vakil said, “Various details regarding this project have been requested, including width available for vehicular movement after the proposed road work, status of water disposal and drainage after the proposed road is completed, and comparative rate analysis of works currently being executed in the respective zones, such as resurfacing, footpaths, signages, and railings, vis-a-vis the rates quoted in the tender. ” The scrutiny comes against the backdrop of controversy over earlier road development projects, where the allocation of space for footpaths and utilities reduced the carriageway available for traffic. However, after a site visit by the then standing committee chairman, concerns emerged over the 18m-wide road connecting CG Road and Mithakhali Circle. A 9m-wide footprint comprising footpaths, parking and utility zones left only 9m for vehicular movement, triggering controversy resulting in suspension of work. Download the TOI App.

The committee directed civic officials to negotiate with the contractor to bring down the rates before the proposal is reconsidered. At its meeting on Wednesday, the committee deferred the proposal to develop the road from Shahid Chowk near Vastrapur Lake to Himalaya Mall in Bodakdev ward, pending clarifications on key aspects of the project.
