The former MP said Union food minister Prahlad Joshi had assured farmer organisations that a committee constituted to address sugar cane-related issues would decide on minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar before Nov 20. He demanded that the MSP be increased to Rs 50 per kg, arguing that the benchmark price had remained unchanged for the past eight years.
The agitation will be intensified if our demand is ignored,” Shetti said. We will not allow mills to commence crushing operations unless they announce a satisfactory cane price.
“If Karnataka can take the initiative to resolve the issue before the crushing season begins, Maharashtra should do the same.
“Sugar is already being sold in the market at more than Rs 50 per kg.
Raising the MSP will not fuel inflation, but it will improve the financial position of sugar mills, help them secure larger bank loans and enable them to pay farmers better cane prices,” he said.
