The incident occurred at 2.20am between Neyyattinkara and Parassala, near Kanyakumari district, when mud slipped onto the tracks amid heavy rain. The loco pilot of the Bilaspur–Tirunelveli Express spotted the obstruction and attempted to stop the train. However, four wheels of the locomotive derailed. The passenger coaches remained on the tracks, averting a major accident. The disruption spread to trains approaching the affected section. The Tambaram–Thiruvananthapuram Amrit Bharat Express was detained at Nanguneri, another Tambaram special at Eraniel and the Madurai–Punalur Express at North Panakudi. The Guruvayur–Chennai Egmore Express was also among services affected. Southern Railway subsequently terminated the Tambaram–Thiruvananthapuram Amrit Bharat Express at Nagercoil Town. Its return service towards Tambaram originated from Nagercoil Town instead of Thiruvananthapuram, leaving passengers travelling to and from the Kerala capital without their scheduled connections. Meanwhile, the Bilaspur–Tirunelveli Express was short-terminated at Neyyattinkara, with buses arranged for passengers travelling towards Tirunelveli. The impact was particularly felt by daily commuters crossing the state border for work. Six passenger services connecting Nagercoil with Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam were cancelled, forcing workers to seek alternative transport. Download the TOI App.
