Ahmedabad: Surgeons at Civil Hospital performed a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a 31-year-old woman to remove 400 small gallstones (hardened deposits of digestive fluid that form in the gall bladder). Officials said that the woman was brought to the hospital on Oct 5 with severe stomach pain, fever and vomiting. Due to the condition of the woman and severe swelling, the surgery was challenging,” said an official.

“Timely treatment can save lives.” A month before admission, the woman had undergone treatment for an abortion. She was also treated for swelling of the pancreas caused by gallstones. “She then returned with severe pain in the abdomen. The reports showed that swelling of the gall bladder had caused it to stick to other internal organs. The surgeons removed the gall bladder through surgery after which it was found that it was full of small stones along with pus. The woman is now stable after surgery. City experts explained that gallstones differ slightly from kidney stones in terms of symptoms, often triggering sharp pain in the upper or central abdomen, particularly following meals. Other common warning signs include nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. These stone formations are frequently linked to risk factors such as a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet, obesity, and diabetes. Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the gall bladder in severe cases, though doctors may rely solely on stone-dissolving medications in less critical instances. The official warned against ignoring persistent stomach ache or gastrointestinal issues, including vomiting and diarrhoea.
