Thrissur : National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Thrissur Rural Police to take appropriate action on a complaint concerning the deaths of eight engineering students in a road accident on NH 66 at Kaipamangalam on Sept 4.
The findings of the inquiry and the response of the police authorities are awaited, according to the commission. The complaint, filed by Delhi-based social activist Krishna Rajput, raised concerns about road safety measures, the alleged parking of a truck on the highway, traffic management, barricading and lack of warning signs. It sought an impartial inquiry into the circumstances leading to the accident and the identification of any lapses on the part of the authorities concerned. The commission has clarified that referring the complaint to the district police chief does not establish negligence or fix liability for the accident.
