Pimpri Chinchwad has more than 30 lakh registered vehicles, according to the civic body’s 2025-26 Environment Status Report. The city has around 2,073km of roads and traffic signal systems at 154 junctions.
We will soon conduct a trial at the two locations to assess the feasibility of the system,” a senior PCMC official said. Mahesh Kawale, joint city engineer in the electrical department, said the system was already operational in cities such as Nagpur and could help reduce unnecessary waiting time by allocating signal time based on traffic demand. Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) plans to install an AI-based Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) at two congestion-prone junctions in Moshi to ease traffic snarls. The system will automatically adjust traffic signal timings based on real-time traffic volume, replacing fixed signal cycles. A seven-day trial will be conducted at Moshi Gaothan and Bharatmata junctions on the Pune-Nashik highway to assess the system’s effectiveness in reducing congestion. “The implementation will be carried out in coordination with the traffic police. PCMC commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi had directed the electrical department to explore the use of the technology at busy junctions to address traffic congestion in the city. The civic body plans to use existing CCTV cameras to monitor traffic and evaluate the system during the trial. If successful, the city will introduce the technology at other congested junctions in phases. However, motorists still face congestion on major roads and internal streets. Several junctions across the city, including Nashik Phata, Bhumkar Chowk, Dange Chowk, Chikhali Chowk and the Phoenix Mall area, remain major congestion hotspots.
