Kochi : Sixty-four human lives were lost in the rain-related incidents in Kerala between June 6 and Oct 6 (southwest monsoon) this year in the state. Of the total 64 fatalities, 29 cases are drowning deaths. Legal heirs of those deceased, included in the natural calamity category, would get a relief amount of Rs 4 lakh from the disaster management authority.
As per the preliminary fatality data from Kerala state disaster management authority (KSDMA), lives were lost in drowning, land slips, lightning, flash floods and trees falling in heavy rain and strong winds. However, two deaths have not been included in the natural calamity category as the identity of the deceased has not been confirmed. However, sources said the relief amount would be distributed only after a detailed probe. “Most of the deaths, especially drowning cases, in the preliminary reports are accidental cases,” said a source. Flash floods and falling of trees have claimed six lives each. Both of them are males who died on consecutive days in Pathanamthitta. Download the TOI App.
