Sauj Jheel was notified as a Ramsar site on Oct 15
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has strengthened its position as a leader in wetland conservation with the inclusion of Sauj Jheel in Mainpuri as a Ramsar site, taking the state’s total number of internationally recognised wetlands to 14. With this, UP now has the second-highest number of Ramsar sites in the country after Tamil Nadu, which has 20. The Ramsar designation is granted to wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, signed in Iran in 1971.
Ramsar recognition not only aids ecological conservation but also promotes nature-based tourism, generating employment opportunities and boosting local economies in communities surrounding these wetlands, according to UP Ecotourism Development Board. Minister of state for environment, forest and climate change (independent charge) Arun Kumar Saxena credited the achievement to the efforts of chief minister Yogi Adityanath , saying the state govt’s focus on conservation had helped secure international recognition for its wetlands. The tag enhances global visibility of wetlands, attracts birdwatchers, researchers and tourists, and strengthens conservation measures.
