Work on a power supply line near the Ganeshmala area led to such an unprecedented traffic jam, said police, adding that the snarl created huge chaos at the Rajaram bridge junction. Mahesh Pokale, a local activist, said PMC has constructed two flyovers on Sinhagad Road but the traffic problems still persist. Regular commuters are facing a lot of hardships owing to overall mismanagement,” he said. Local activist Vinit Dhayarkar said the civic administration should give a detailed explanation of the steps taken so far to manage increasing traffic on Sinhagad Road. He said, “We have five main demands. The work on Sun City to Karvenagar bridge is in the last stages, as the approach roads to the bridge are yet to be developed to full capacity, said a PMC official.
The entire flyover and also a stretch of the road under the flyover witnessed slow-moving traffic. Traffic police personnel deployed additional manpower at the Rajaram bridge chowk to clear the chaos. Regular commuters in the Sinhagad Road area have claimed that the road has been witnessing repeated traffic snarls. Traffic problems in the area have not been resolved despite visits by officials of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and mayor Manjusha Nagpure. “It is the responsibility of the civic administration to find solutions to the traffic jams and clearing bottlenecks. The administration should not take up any road digging work without intimation and alternate traffic plans. The mayor had asked for a detailed traffic survey. The administration should declare findings of the survey and action taken on suggestions. They should also clear all encroachments obstructing smooth vehicular flow. Prepare a plan to clear the bottleneck at Dhayari phata and Dhayari gaon. The residents have also demanded that the administration open the Sun City to Karvenagar bridge and widen the Rajaram bridge to decentralise the traffic flow and reduce dependency on the existing Rajaram bridge.
