Shop owners are setting up stalls on the footpath and encroaching into the road on East Marret Street, waiting for the renovated shops to be returned to the original owners. The encroachments cause distress for the public on the already crowded street
Madurai corporation had planned an e-auction for 44 newly constructed shops at the market on September 28, with an official announcement stipulating that participation should be restricted exclusively to individuals who previously operated shops at that location. A total of 120 applicants registered for the auction by paying Rs1,000 as a registration fee online and submitting bank drafts to the office to secure clearance certificates.
“The 44 shops were built newly at East Marret Street to relocate roadside street vendors, whose current stalls cause heavy traffic congestion and public inconvenience, thereby safeguarding their livelihoods while easing traffic flow,” said a senior corporation official.
