Stay a step ahead, say cops — Cyber traps are changing

Chitradurga: With cyber fraud cases posing a growing challenge, Chitradurga district police have intensified digital awareness campaigns to educate people about online scams, even as the detection rate remains low.

Of the 76 cybercrime cases registered in the district up to Oct 15 this year, police have detected only one, while investigations continue in 73 cases. Investment-related frauds have caused Rs 81.3 lakh in losses this year. Police have frozen Rs 11.4 lakh and approached the court to return it to the complainant. In 2025, police registered 65 cybercrime cases and detected 19. Investigations are continuing in 39 cases, while seven have reached the trial stage. Investment frauds accounted for losses of Rs 1.1 crore. Police recovered Rs 9.8 lakh and returned it to a complainant. Calling the national cybercrime helpline 1930 within the first hour, known as the golden hour, can improve the chances of freezing the money before it is withdrawn or transferred.

We have launched a special social media campaign and are conducting awareness programmes across the district,” Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey said.

Two cases have reached the trial stage in court, according to cybercrime police station records. To counter the threat, police are sharing alerts on social media and conducting awareness programmes in schools, colleges, parks, weekly markets and bus stands. The campaign focuses on digital arrest scams, malicious APK files, task-based fraud and investment schemes promising assured returns. Police have urged victims to report online fraud immediately. “People are being alerted, particularly about trending fraud methods.
