Cops rule out AIIMS student’s bias claims, recommend counselling
The official said police questioned the student regarding his allegations of discrimination but found no material to substantiate the claim. “He did not provide any specific instance or evidence of discrimination during the inquiry, and we have ruled out the allegation,” the officer said. Officials said AIIMS Madurai has repeatedly attempted to contact the student’s family but has so far received no response.
Madurai: A disabled MBBS student of AIIMS Madurai, who alleged discrimination by faculty members in a video posted on social media, has been counselled after a police inquiry found no evidence to support his allegations. Based on police recommendation, the student underwent counselling at GRH, where doctors reportedly diagnosed him with stress-related issues and advised rest. It was still continuing efforts to inform them about the developments and ensure appropriate support for the student.
The student had earlier come under continuous hostel monitoring after reportedly sending a suicide note to administrative staff amid academic distress, according to a statement from a psychiatrist associated with the institution. A senior police official told TOI that three years after admission, the student had not completed his first year and had failed in two of the three first-year subjects. Following the video, AIIMS authorities initiated efforts to assess his mental well-being. Since he had exhausted the permitted attempts to clear one of the examinations, he was unable to appear for it again.
