Engineering projections indicate that AV2 is roughly 25% to 32% more efficient than its predecessor, AV1. YouTube has confirmed plans to begin rolling out AV2 streaming as early as early 2027, targeting the web browser version of the platform first, according to a report by Android Authority. As of March 19, 2026, over 90% of YouTube’s catalog (weighted by watch time) is available in AV1. YouTube AV2 streams will be available for Web as soon as early 2027,” Des Keane, Engineering Director at YouTube was quoted as saying.
YouTube is about to enhance its video streaming experience with an upcoming move to next-generation video compression technology that promises sharper visual quality while consuming comparatively less internet bandwidth. In practical terms, this efficiency gain allows platforms to stream noticeably higher-definition video at existing bitrates, or maintain sharp, pristine image clarity at significantly lower bitrates, essentially cutting down total data consumption for viewers. Amazon, and Apple have remained silent regarding their deployment roadmaps, YouTube is moving ahead openly While major streaming peers such as Netflix. YouTube has anchored its infrastructure around royalty-free, open-standard compression technologies. “YouTube champions open codecs that deliver the best quality video with the fewest playback interruptions. And we’re excited to begin streaming in AV2, which brings even better video quality to users and unlocks new multi-video capabilities. The performance leap delivered by AV2 extends past standard video playback. Engineering leadership at Google Chrome notes that the compression gains will enable complex layout features inside internet browsers. Jim Bankoski, engineering vice president of Chrome, highlighted the broader potential of the standard: “We’re encouraged by the momentum around AV2, with partners like YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video exploring the format and showing strong support for the technology. Beyond faster, higher-quality streaming, AV2 lays the groundwork for new browser experiences, from better multi-view video to higher-resolution, more efficient video conferencing.”
Earlier this year, the Alliance for Open Media finalised the official specifications for the AV2 codec.
For comparison, the original AV1 standard was finalised back in 2018, yet commercial smartphones featuring dedicated AV1 hardware encoding did not arrive on the market until the launch of the Google Pixel 10. The multi-video capability could allow sports fans or event viewers to watch several high-definition camera feeds simultaneously on a single monitor without exhausting system resources or network capacity. However, despite YouTube’s timeline, widespread adoption of AV2 across everyday consumer electronics will take time. Historical rollouts show that video codec adoption moves slowly through global supply chains. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
