Braj Kishore Prajapati of Jaysinghpur said his family completed: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: The annual Deepotsav celebrations in Ayodhya are proving to be a major economic boost for local potter families, with large orders for earthen lamps generating higher incomes and creating employment in villages ahead of the festival.

As preparations gather pace for the 10th Deepotsav on Nov 7, demand for traditional diyas has surged across villages such as Jaysinghpur, Vidyakund and Dyorhi. Potters say the festival has transformed their seasonal earnings, with some receiving orders ranging from 1 lakh to 2 lakh diyas. Braj Kishore Prajapati of Jaysinghpur said his family completed an order of one lakh lamps, while another artisan, Rajesh Prajapati, received an order for 2 lakh diyas.

Potters said the growing scale of Deepotsav has enabled families to earn substantially more than before and reduced the need to migrate elsewhere for work. The use of electric potter’s wheels has further increased production and improved the quality of lamps, helping artisans meet bulk orders within tight deadlines. Entire families are involved in preparing clay, shaping and drying diyas for delivery.

Preparations are also underway to illuminate Ram Ki Paidi with 30 lakh earthen lamps, a key attraction of this year’s Deepotsav. Officials said around 17.64 lakh diyas have already been stocked near the ghats. Nearly 35,000 volunteers, including students and members of various organisations, are expected to participate in the event.
