Activists have criticised poor planning as seasonal hostels for the children of sugar cane cutters remain non-operational

Because authorities expected the number of beneficiaries to surge this year amid worsening rural distress, a senior education department official said preparations had been delayed partly.

“Necessary measures, including starting seasonal hostels, will be implemented soon,” he told TOI . Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : Thousands of sugar cane cutters from Marathwada have begun their annual migration for work, but uncertainty over seasonal residential hostels that keep their children in school is forcing families into hard choices — leave children with relatives or take them to worksites, risking disruption to education, health and well-being. Under govt norms, seasonal hostels operate from Oct to March, allowing children of migrating workers to stay in their native villages and continue their schooling uninterrupted. During this period, the education department also tracks attendance, follows up on prolonged absences and remains in contact with parents to prevent school dropouts, child exploitation and child marriage.

School education minister Dada Bhuse said a review meeting was held on Tuesday to ensure the welfare of sugar cane cutters’ children.
