Kanpur: A youth who allegedly attempted suicide due to debt-related mental stress was rescued and taken to hospital after the Kanpur Nagar police commissionerate received an alert from Meta about his Facebook video on the intervening night of Oct 26 and 27.

Police said he was undergoing treatment and was out of danger.

Lucknow Police Headquarters relayed the alert after the youth posted a video purportedly showing him consuming a poisonous substance and cutting his wrist, according to police. Police said the team found the room locked from inside, managed to get the door opened and provided immediate assistance. Police said preliminary information suggested that debt had caused the mental distress that led to the suicide attempt.

Constable Shailendra Kumar , who was on night duty at the Social Media Cell, used surveillance tools to trace the youth’s live location and found that it fell under Naubasta police station limits. The cell immediately alerted local police. A team comprising sub-inspector Pushpendra Singh , recruit constable Deepak Sharma and head constable-driver Brijesh Kumar was dispatched to the location. The police team informed the youth’s family and took him to the nearest hospital, where he received treatment under medical supervision. The youth works in the private sector.
