Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown returned from a hamstring injury on Monday night in Week 7 and made an immediate impact in a 38-21 win over the Eagles. His fourth-quarter interception of Tanner McKee came with Philadelphia still trailing 31-21. Because he “also lost two people that are very close to him, he wrote that Overshown told him the hamstring was not the only problem he faced in recent weeks,.
Overshown lost two people close to him while he was out, and he played the game in their honor, according to Patrik Walker of the Cowboys’ team website. Overshown also led Dallas with six tackles and broke up another pass. The box score missed the heavier part of his week. Walker posted the news on social media after the game. Walker added that the performance was Overshown’s way of paying tribute to them and to his faith. Walker’s post did not say who they were.
Dallas scored a touchdown two possessions later to stretch the lead to 38-21. The interception came when Dallas needed something to go its way. The Eagles trailed by ten and were looking for a spark. McKee’s pass landed in Overshown’s hands instead. A ten-point margin in the fourth quarter is not safe by itself.
The Cowboys drafted him in the third round, and he tore his ACL in training camp in 2023. He then tore his ACL, MCL and PCL in Week 14 of the 2024 season, an injury that kept him out until last November. Before this year, Dallas had played 51 games since he joined the league. Overshown appeared in only 19 of them.
Six tackles led the team, and that came after six weeks away. Players coming back from hamstring trouble usually need a few snaps to find their timing. Overshown’s stat line suggests he found his anyway. Availability has been the hard part of Overshown’s career. The hamstring cost him weeks. That context makes Monday more telling. The Cowboys have spent weeks searching for the right mix at linebacker, and one game with Overshown on the field gave them a takeaway, a pass breakup and the team lead in tackles. One game proves little. Still, it shows what the unit has been missing when he is out. Keeping him healthy may now matter as much as any lineup tweak.
The earlier knee injuries cost him whole seasons.
