New Delhi: An alleged demand of Rs 2.5 lakh by a sub-inspector (SI) and a constable, extorted from a suspected drug peddler at Khajuri Khas police station, ended with both police officials being arrested. The peddler was reportedly held at the police station for over 24 hours, during which the peddler was allegedly threatened with jail time.
Following discussions, they allegedly agreed to take Rs 2.5 lakh. He reportedly gave Rs 1 lakh to the cops and his family was contacted to deliver the rest of the money.
The suspected peddler was arrested last week by the accused cops, according to police sources. Following his capture, the two police officers threatened to charge him under the stringent Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and send him to jail. The peddler was then made to withdraw money from an ATM. His relatives then registered a complaint at Timarpur police station, after which a trap was laid to catch them. The accused were asked to come to Timarpur to collect the remaining amount. When the two arrived, the constable was held while his accomplice ran away. Both were suspended after the incident.
A case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS at Khajuri Khas police station against the two cops. Further investigation is under way.
