Mayawati added that public unease had already risen due to concerns over corruption and questions surrounding the electoral process.

In a post on X, Mayawati urged those holding positions of power to avoid “objectionable and toxic politics” against rivals. She said that even when political opponents fail to show respect, they should refrain from conduct that could erode public confidence in the country’s political system, warning that such a decline in trust would not serve the nation or its people. She said political discourse had deteriorated to a point where distrust and bitterness had become “grossly unrestrained” and extended to personal attacks marked by indecency and insults. She said people want attention on issues such as poverty, unemployment and inflation, and warned that competitive mudslinging would further embitter the political atmosphere.

Mayawati did not cite a specific incident, but her remarks come amid a controversy over Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge ’s comments directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ’s father. She also flagged rhetoric afflicted with casteism and escalating toward violent language, saying it undermines the dignity and decorum of the country.
