Prayagraj Chheoki railway station
Chheoki is around 10 km from the main junction, and such confusion can result in passengers missing trains. It was known simply as Chheoki before being renamed Allahabad Chheoki on April 1, 2017, after the number of trains using the station increased. Similar problems are reported among passengers travelling on trains from Rambagh towards Varanasi, while visitors coming for Sangam darshan sometimes head to the main junction instead of Prayagraj Sangam.
Prayagraj : To reduce confusion among passengers, particularly during the Magh Mela and other major religious events, the railway administration has proposed dropping “Prayagraj” from the names of three city stations — Prayagraj Chheoki, Prayagraj Rambagh and Prayagraj Sangam. The proposal has been sent to the Railway Board and a final decision will be taken at the ministry level, said PRO, Prayagraj division, Amit Kumar Singh. A passenger booked on a train from Prayagraj Chheoki, for instance, may reach Prayagraj Junction after noticing only the word “Prayagraj” on the ticket. The four stations acquired their present “Prayagraj” prefixes in Feb 2020, following state govt’s notification after the city was renamed from Allahabad on Oct 18, 2018.
Under the proposal, the three stations would be known simply as Chheoki, Rambagh and Sangam, while the name of Prayagraj Junction would remain unchanged. The move is aimed at addressing a practical problem that has increasingly surfaced after the renaming of the stations. The confusion has an interesting history. Thereafter, Allahabad Junction became Prayagraj Junction, Allahabad City became Prayagraj Rambagh, Allahabad Chheoki became Prayagraj Chheoki and Prayag Ghat became Prayagraj Sangam.
Interestingly, Chheoki had undergone a name change earlier.
Because of its location in the Rambagh area, earlier known officially as Allahabad City, it was popularly called Rambagh. Stay updated with the latest Prayagraj news. Rambagh, meanwhile, has long been the station’s popular local identity. Download the TOI App.
