Kolkata : The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) may soon discuss ways to enhance the enrolment ratio at the higher secondary level, its new president, Ashit Kumar Mandal, said after taking charge on Tuesday.

Mandal emphasised that every year around 10–11 lakh students appear for the Madhyamik exams, but at the HS level, only 6–7 lakh students write the exams and over 3 lakh students drop out. He stated that the council will hold a review of the semester system at the HS level and will gather feedback from school heads to understand functional issues. “This is a major issue that makes me think about how to bring them back into the education system. There must be socio-economic issues involved that we need to understand first and find ways to bring these students back into the system,” he added.
