Kanpur: The district administration has planned to prepare a comprehensive vision document to promote Kanpur as a major destination for historical, religious and cultural tourism, while exploring opportunities in eco-tourism, green space tourism and rural tourism. District magistrate Mahendra Singh Tanwar announced the decision at a meeting of the District Tourism and Cultural Council on Tuesday.
He said that Kanpur’s identity should not remain confined to that of an industrial city and directed officials to explore ways to showcase its rich historical and cultural heritage to attract more tourists. He said that Bithoor’s religious heritage should be linked with tourism development, with active participation from the local community to boost economic activities in the area. Emphasising the mythological and religious significance of Bithoor, the DM directed officials to explore the development of Brahmavarta Parikrama Marg. The DM also stressed the need to preserve and revive Kanpur’s traditional folk culture, particularly Nautanki, which once enjoyed a distinct identity in the region. He called for coordinated efforts involving local artists and cultural organisations to revive the traditional theatre form and restore its former prominence. Tanwar directed officials to give due prominence to the ancient brick temple at Bhitargaon, the Nibiyakheda temple and the Mansoon temple on the global tourism map. He also asked the officials to explore the development of essential tourist facilities and promote the historical and cultural significance of these sites. During the meeting, the DM reviewed tourism development projects at several religious sites, including Chaturbhuj Baba Temple in Sarsaul, Hanuman Temple in Kaushalpuri, Panki Hanuman Temple, Rawal Devi Temple in Maharajpur and Shri Radhakrishna Virajman Temple, among others. He directed the concerned officials to ensure that all projects were completed within the stipulated time and maintained high standards of quality. He laid stress on regular monitoring of the works.
