Kanpur: A 16-year-old Class 9 student and district-level volleyball champion died by suicide at her home in Armapur Estate, Kanpur, on Tuesday night, police said.
The deceased girl, daughter of a defence employee, was found hanging in her room by her younger sister and grandmother, who were at home when the incident occurred, according to police. Family members said the girl had been dancing in her room while music played shortly before the incident. Her parents had gone to the market with their two other children. When the music stopped, her sister went to check on her and found the room locked from inside. After receiving no response despite repeatedly calling out, she alerted their grandmother. They pushed the door open and found the girl hanging.
Armapur station house officer Rajendrakant Shukla said the family could not state the reason for the suicide. Police and a forensic team reached the house and collected evidence. The body was sent for postmortem.
