Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) supplies around 770 MLD of water: The wider industry impact

Nagpur: Nagpur’s sewage treatment infrastructure is helping conserve precious reservoir water, with 390 million litres per day (MLD) of treated sewage supplied to Mahagenco’s Koradi and Khaparkheda thermal power plants, reducing their dependence on freshwater.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) supplies around 770 MLD of water daily, while the city generates approximately 520 MLD of sewage. Officials from the civic body’s public health engineering department told TOI that around 540 MLD of sewage water is being discharged, highlighting the need to strengthen treatment, reuse and disposal systems. Nagpur currently treats 423.5 MLD of sewage daily through treatment facilities operated by NMC, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd, according to official figures. NMC’s existing infrastructure includes two major sewage treatment plants at Bhandewadi, with capacities of 130 MLD and 200 MLD, besides smaller facilities. NIT operates additional treatment plants with a combined capacity of 63.5 MLD, while a 20 MLD facility at Narsala has also been completed and is treating sewage.

Nag River Pollution Abatement Project includes treatment plants with a combined capacity of 92 MLD, while a proposed 45 MLD plant under AMRUT 2.0 is intended to address pollution in Pohra river. Together, these projects would raise the stated treatment capacity to 560.5 MLD. Future projects are expected to increase the city’s treatment capacity.
