Kochi : Following the recent accident that claimed the lives of three youths, the motor vehicles department (MVD), Kerala Police, and Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) on Thursday carried out a joint inspection along the Athani-Airport corridor to enforce immediate road safety enhancements along the nearly 5km stretch.

The mishap happened in the wee hours of Oct 11 on the Airport Road. The trio was riding a scooter when the speeding car rear-ended them, dragging the vehicle nearly 100 meters. A preliminary investigation by the MVD confirmed that the high-speed Mini Cooper involved in the crash was travelling at twice the permitted 70kmph speed limit while the driver was under the influence of alcohol.

Proposed interventions include the deployment of AI-powered speed enforcement cameras to detect traffic violations continuously, installation of rumble strips and hazard blinkers near high-risk curves and U-turns, upgrading directional signage and high-visibility road markings to improve nighttime navigation, and also increasing nighttime patrols targeting reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. A speeding Mini Cooper car hit a scooter from behind, resulting in the death of three youths – Devika, Gopika and Iyaz.
