Farmers said minister Lamani and the Haveri Deputy Commissioner had recently held a meeting with representatives of sugar factories, where the management of GM Sugars had assured officials and growers that crushing would not begin until the price was fixed. The government and factory management must announce the rate before farmers harvest and supply their crop,” protesters said. The protesters arrived with a tractor loaded with sugarcane, saying it symbolised their objection to factories accepting cane without first announcing a remunerative rate. However, they alleged that GM Sugars units at Sanguru and Bairanapad were preparing to commence crushing despite the assurance. They claimed some farmers had already begun harvesting and supplying cane to factories, creating pressure on others to follow without clarity on returns. “We will not allow factories to begin crushing without first fixing the sugarcane price. The farmers warned they would resist any attempt to start crushing operations without meeting their demand. They urged govt to intervene immediately and ensure that a mutually acceptable price is declared to protect sugarcane growers’ interests. They sought immediate intervention from authorities.
