Madurai: India’s goal of becoming a developed nation (Viksit Bharat) by 2047 can be realised only through the holistic development and empowerment of villages, Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan said at Gandhigram Rural Institute in Dindigul on Friday. Radhakrishnan said India had made progress over the past 12 years in rural housing, drinking water, electrification, road connectivity, sanitation and digital integration. Targeted welfare initiatives have helped about 25 crore people escape multidimensional poverty between 2014 and 2023, he added.

Addressing the institute’s Golden Jubilee celebrations and 39th convocation, Radhakrishnan said rural development must be a fundamental pillar of national progress. “Rural empowerment does not mean transforming every village into an urban town, but ensuring access to quality infrastructure, essential public services, livelihood opportunities and living standards comparable to urban areas,” he said. Radhakrishnan said artificial intelligence, automation and digital technologies are rapidly reshaping global employment.

He urged students to master these technologies while developing creativity, problem-solving skills and an entrepreneurial outlook. Radhakrishnan also presented gold medals to meritorious students. Governor R V Arlekar was also present at the event.
