Rao was arrested in March 2025 after arriving at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru from Dubai. She was subsequently detained under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act and released on bail in April 2026. Rao was accompanied by her father, retired DGP Ramachandra Rao. They travelled from Govt Guest House in Hassan to the temple, accompanied throughout by protocol staff and police personnel. When media persons attempted to photograph her near the temple, she gestured for them not to take pictures and proceeded towards the shrine. The VIP treatment for an accused person currently on bail has prompted public discussion and questions over the propriety of govt staff and police arranging an official vehicle for her visit and escorting her back after darshan.
