Thane: Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has imposed restrictions on washing two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers and other vehicles at service centres across the city as part of measures to conserve water and ensure drinking water security until August 2027. The move comes as Thane already faces water cuts of around 1.5 days every week imposed by MIDC and the daily 10% cuts by BMC. The 24-hour cuts scheduled to be imposed by STEM and TMC’s own system every Monday till further notice have now been postponed until after the festive season, an official said on Saturday.

However, cleaning vehicles with a wet cloth using water from a bucket is permitted, officials said. “The restrictions come amid concerns over a possible drought-like situation due to the potential impact of El Niño and the need to manage available water reserves carefully,” said an official. The corporation has also appealed to citizens to conserve water while service centres and garages have been instructed not to use potable water or water drawn from borewells and wells to wash vehicles. The use of pressure jets for vehicle washing has also been prohibited.

There are roughly 450 service stations and garages operating within the city limits.
