“In subsequent tenders, we will invite bids from coal-based power plants for round-the-clock

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Chennai: After repeated attempts to secure low-cost power through short-term tenders failed, Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) plans to invite bids only from coal-based plants for round-the-clock supply to bridge the state’s power deficit until July 2027.

The last three tenders drew the lowest quotes of 37, 41.50 and 35 per unit from gas-based plants, and TNPDCL faced criticism for failing to secure cheaper power. Officials said coal-based power would be substantially cheaper than gas-based electricity, though it would have to be purchased for all 24 hours. Because the quoted prices were too high, electricity and law minister C T R Nirmal Kumar said the contracts were not signed.

“In subsequent tenders, we will invite bids from coal-based power plants for round-the-clock supply,” an official said.

“With demand expected to be high, we can opt for round-the-clock supply,” the official further said.
