Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Saturday inspected about 25 street food stalls around Sealdah station, including a ‘pocket paratha’ stall which gained fame on social media. “We picked up 40 food samples for spot inspection, of which 19 were found short of standard.

The entire food was thrown away,” said a KMC official. A spot inspection usually points out if cooked food has colour that is not allowed according to food safety standards. KMC sources said Saturday’s food safety drive was conducted only at street food stalls. “We picked up surveillance samples for future laboratory tests that will reveal more about the quality of the food that is served,” said a KMC source. Officials said the laboratory tests will flag samples that do not conform to FSSAI guidelines. Non-conforming food means food that is “unsafe to eat”, or it is “sub-standard” or “there is defect in labelling”.

Unsafe food is highly injurious to health. Substandard food is not injurious, but is not desirable either. The third category of non-conforming food is when packed food lacks batch number, date of manufacture and expiry, and nutritional information.
