Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule chairing a review meeting Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule chairing a review meeting Nagpur: A day after mayor Neeta Thakre said a water cut was inevitable due to declining reservoir levels, guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday sought to reassure citizens by ruling out an immediate cut and announcing plans for long-term water security projects worth Rs1,300 crore.

The proposals must be submitted to the state govt promptly for approval, he said, adding that the projects could provide a sustainable solution to Nagpur’s water shortage and meet the growing demand in neighbouring urban areas.

The proposed Kanhan-Kolar barrage is expected to provide the city with a more reliable water source and strengthen its long-term water security. Bawankule directed NMC and the water resources department to jointly prepare the proposal and secure state cabinet approval. The meeting was attended by minister of state Ashish Jaiswal, mayor Neeta Thakre, Rajya Sabha member Maya Ivnate, MLCs Rajiv Poddar and Sanjay Bhende, MLAs Krishna Khopde and Pravin Datke, deputy mayor Leela Hathibed, standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare, municipal commissioner Vipin Itankar, NIT chairman Sanjay Meena and senior officials from NMC, NMRDA and the water resources department.
