The truck ahead of them suddenly swerved after its driver spotted a divider placed on the highway as part of the ongoing construction of new flyovers, according to the police. Mannarkkad police said the driver may have dozed off, leading to the accident. The deceased has been identified as Mithun , son of Manikandan and Shyamala of Kinarpallam in Kozhinjampara. The accident occurred near K N Puthur, close to Walayar. The two were travelling from Palakkad to visit relatives in Walayar after celebrating Rahul’s birthday. The motorcycle, which was following the truck, crashed into it. In the impact, both riders were thrown beneath the truck. Residents along with highway police and Walayar police pulled them out. They were rushed to Palakkad district hospital in ambulances. Mithun succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Rahul, who suffered serious injuries to his head and legs, is undergoing treatment. Residents alleged that the accident was caused by the installation of road dividers without adequate warning and in an unsafe manner. The accident occurred around 4am when the bus, travelling from Madurai to Kannur, crashed into the stationary truck. The impact completely damaged the front portion of the bus. The bus driver and another person sustained serious injuries.
