Kerala HC Chief Justice Soumen Sen is also seen CJI Surya Kant in conversation with Supreme Court Justice Sarasa Venkatanarayana Bhatti during the Kerala HC platinum jubilee celebrations on Sunday.

Delivering his inaugural address, the CJI said that while Supreme Court is often spoken of as the ultimate guardian of the Constitution, constitutional justice in India does not begin and end in New Delhi. He said that the difference between justice and injustice lies not in the final judgment, but in whether the court intervenes when intervention is most needed. The CJI said that Kerala High Court’s willingness to lead has not just remained confined to judgments but extended into the administration of justice itself. “In Jan this year, I virtually inaugurated the fully paperless functioning of the Kalpetta judicial district in Wayanad, the first district judiciary in the country to achieve this transformation, for which I heartily congratulate the Kerala High Court,” he said. He said that Kerala High Court gave the first woman judge – Justice Anna Chandy – to the high court, and this high court eventually gave the first woman judge to Supreme Court of India, Justice M Fathima Beevi. “It seems to me that after I took over as Chief Justice of India, the collegium must have been influenced by this pragmatic and progressive approach of the Kerala High Court as we have been able to bring two distinguished women judges to Supreme Court in the recent time,” he said.

Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar delivered the welcome address at the event presided over by Justice Soumen Sen, Kerala High Court Chief Justice. Union MoS for law and justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, Justice S V Bhatti, advocate general K Jaju Babu, additional solicitor general P Sreekumar and Peeyus A Kottam, president of Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association attended the function. Senior judges from across the country and retired judges were also in attendance. The CJI also pointed out that Kerala High Court became the first constitutional court, not just in India, but across the globe, to prohibit smoking in public places.
