Flower growers discard their produce near the Haveri district hospital market as prices plummet after the market was shifted
Farmers alleged that galate and marigold flowers were purchased for as little as Rs 10 per kg at the APMC yard and later transported back to the old market area for sale at nearly double the price. The old market had often been blamed for traffic congestion and inconvenience to patients, motorists and residents. However, traders alleged that the relocation was carried out without adequate preparations or basic amenities. They demanded a dedicated complex, sheds, drinking water facilities and other infrastructure necessary for flower trading. Furious over the steep fall in rates, several growers dumped marigolds on the road in protest, arguing that the prices failed to cover cultivation, harvesting and transportation costs.
Haveri : Confusion and anger marked the first day of flower trading at the APMC yard on Hangal Road after the district’s flower market was shifted from its long-standing location near the district hospital on Saturday, triggering protests by traders and farmers.
