Kottayam : Mundakayam Police on Monday arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly causing a multi-vehicle pile-up at Chotti near Mundakkayam in Kottayam on Sunday morning that left 14 people injured. A Kanjirappally court remanded him in judicial custody for 14 days.
The man told them he had intended to end his life, according to the police. The police said Shalom, a resident of Koottickal, was driving at high speed when his car hit another car and an autorickshaw ahead of him, triggering a chain collision involving around six vehicles that were following behind. The police said Shalom told the team that he had set out from his home with the intention of ending his life but could not do so during the journey. He was later admitted to Govt Medical College Hospital, Kottayam, after complaining of physical discomfort, the police said.
On reaching Chotti, he allegedly kept the accelerator pressed with his eyes closed.
Shalom, who was injured, was arrested while he was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kanjirappally. A case has been registered against him for an attempt to commit culpable homicide.
