Ahmedabad: Seven members of the Jain community have moved Gujarat High Court, challenging the shifting of ancient idols from a derasar in Gomtipur to a new temple being built at Shilaj in western Ahmedabad.
Recording the assurance, Justice Nikhil Kariel posted the matter for further hearing on Dec 3. One of the petitioners had earlier approached the charity commissioner against a resolution passed by the trust in Feb 2025 approving the relocation. The dispute stems from a resolution passed on Feb 2, 2025, by Rajpur Trust, formally known as Shri Rajpur Jain Shwetamber Murtipujak Chitamani Parshwanath Bhagwan Derasar, Ahmedabad. The resolution approved the shifting of idols said to be between 400 and 2,200 years old.

However, counsel for the trust told the court that constructing the main temple would take more than a year. Some of the idols have already been installed at the new temple. He assured the court that no further idol installations would be carried out for now. The petitioners have challenged an Aug order of the charity commissioner permitting the temple trustees to shift the idols. Appearing for the petitioners, advocate Rahul Sharma argued that the trust deed does not permit the shifting of idols. He submitted that some idols had already been moved and urged the high court to restrain any further installation. For the trust, senior advocate Anshin Desai submitted that the installation took place in the presence of hundreds of devotees by following due rituals. The petitioners contend that the Public Trust Register and the trust’s stated objectives do not authorise relocating the idols from the Gomtipur derasar, and that the trustees had no power to pass such a resolution. The petition seeks quashing of the charity commissioner’s order, directions to restore the idols to the Gomtipur Derasar, and orders requiring the trustees to personally bear the cost of repairs for alleged damage caused during excavation.
