Referring to the ongoing debate over the SIR, he claimed the exercise had been conducted 12 times in the country, including 10 times during Congress govts and once under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Lucknow: Senior BJP members on Tuesday attacked the INDIA bloc members, including Congress and Samajwadi Party, during the party’s “Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao” (Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy) campaign in Uttar Pradesh, accusing the opposition of undermining democratic institutions and attempting to create instability in the country. Addressing party workers after a foot march in Lucknow, Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the opposition had failed to challenge PM Narendra Modi electorally and was resorting to disruptive politics. Calling Modi “the jewel in the crown of the nation” and “a blessing from God,” Chouhan said the PM lifted millions out of poverty and remained unmatched politically. Attacking Congress MP Rahul Gandhi , Chouhan said those aspiring to govern must first win the confidence of the people. “If they cannot win elections, they are spreading anarchy on the streets,” he said, urging party workers to raise slogans that would be heard “all the way in Delhi. Defending BJP’s democratic credentials, Pathak said the party had always respected the people’s mandate, pointing to elections in states where the opposition had emerged victorious. Nadda said India is regarded as the “mother of democracy” and that institutions such as Election Commission and Supreme Court have earned global recognition. He alleged that some “irresponsible political parties” were attempting to erode confidence in Election Commission. Targeting Rahul and Akhilesh, Nadda said opposition leaders should stop blaming Election Commission for electoral setbacks.

They were joined by some BJP allies like RLD, SBSP and Apna Dal (S). Scores of BJP functionaries and workers gathered in Hazratganj for the march that aimed at countering INDIA bloc’s aggressive positioning over the past many days over allegations of anomalies in electoral rolls. Chouhan also targeted SP chief Akhilesh Yadav , claiming that SP would have no significant role in the UP elections. Referring to the law-and-order situation during previous SP govts, he alleged that people were afraid to step out in the evenings.

The campaign, scheduled to be carried out in all six organisational regions of UP, will continue till Nov 5. The rally was part of BJP’s nationwide campaign launched in response to opposition protests over Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. “The opposition was attempting to mislead the people while referring to developments in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka,” he said. Pathak further claimed that opposition leaders were seeking a “regime change” through agitation rather than democratic means. “The opposition wanted to create a situation in India similar to Bangladesh to gain power,” he said. The opposition’s conduct is similar to people who throw stones and then run away,” he said. If nothing works, they begin blaming the umpire,” Jayant said, in an apparent reference to opposition criticism of ECI.

UP BJP chief Pankaj Chaudhary too charged INDIA bloc with attempting to destabilise the country and seek regime change, alleging the opposition was working at the behest of foreign powers. Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak accused INDIA bloc of repeatedly questioning constitutional institutions. He alleged that the opposition was unwilling to accept democratic verdicts and criticised attempts to discredit institutions, including Supreme Court. In Uttar Pradesh, rallies and marches were organised in Lucknow, Bareilly and other districts. Former BJP president and Union minister JP Nadda also participated in the campaign in Bareilly. “Rahul and Akhilesh should stop finding fault with the ECI. BJP ally, RLD president and Union minister Jayant Chaudhary, who joined the BJP protest march in Bareilly, too took a swipe at opposition parties, saying their condition resembled that of children trying to explain a defeat in a cricket match. “After losing, they keep offering one excuse after another.
