Gadchiroli Ryots End Road Blockade On CM Appeal

Nagpur: Farmers of 13 villages on Wednesday called off their road blockade and sit-in on National Highway 353C at Ashti in Gadchiroli district after chief minister and Gadchiroli guardian minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to them to end the agitation.

The farmers were protesting acquisition of their land for a proposed steel project in the Yenapur and Jayrampur area. The blockade began on Monday afternoon and hit traffic towards Chandrapur, Gadchiroli and south Gadchiroli.

Farmers of 14 villages in the Bhendala area marched to the Chamorshi sub-divisional officer’s office on May 21. In Oct, former Congress district president Mahendra Brahmanwade said farmers of the Bhendala and Gurvala areas, who have held hunger strikes and blockades against land acquisition for a proposed iron project and an airport, would march on foot to the Nagpur winter session from Dec 1 if the acquisition order was not cancelled. Police then arranged for the protesters to be taken home, and traffic on the highway has resumed, stated a note from the govt.
