Mysuru : Vehicle owners in Chamarajanagar district have been booked in 1,488 cases for violating traffic rules in the six weeks since AI-enabled cameras were installed across state and national highways.

Authorities sent notices to the owners in all 1,488 cases. Only 17 replied and paid penalties, totalling Rs 9,500 for violations including riding without a helmet, overspeeding, and triple riding. Owners in the remaining 1,471 cases have not yet paid. Speaking to TOI , Chamarajanagar SP M Mutharaju said the department sent notices to owners in all 1,488 cases and recovered the penalty in 17 of them. The department has installed more than 166 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at strategic locations on state and national highways passing through the district. They can read vehicle registration plates even when vehicles travel at speeds up to 100 kmph. The intelligent traffic management system (ITMS) was introduced on Sept 22.

Owners who have not responded to the notices or paid the penalty will face tough action from the department, he said. Vehicle riders must strictly follow the govt’s traffic rules and guidelines, he said. The cameras were installed to improve rider safety on state and national highways and enforce strict lane discipline, he said.

Caught on Camera The cameras are designed to work around the clock to monitor speeding, regulate traffic, strengthen crime surveillance and reduce road accidents. The cameras also help officials detect a wide range of violations that require immediate police intervention. These include riding without helmets, triple riding, mobile phone use while riding, not wearing seat belts, illegal parking, wrong-way driving, drag racing, speeding on empty roads, and stalled vehicles that cause problems to pedestrians. The system integrates with the e-challan platform and the national Vahan vehicle database, so it automatically generates violation notices. After verifying the violations on camera, officials also sent notices to vehicle owners on their mobile phones and by physical delivery. Download the TOI App.
