The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh vice-president of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasangh, Anupam Kumar Singh alias Rajan (38), allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his licensed rifle at his residence in Aladaspur village in Barabanki district early Thursday.

The incident came to light around 3 am when family members heard a gunshot and rushed to the verandah of the house.

He had sustained a bullet injury to the left side of his chest and was declared dead by the time relatives reached him, family members said. They found Singh lying in a pool of blood, with his licensed rifle beside him.

His wife, Aarti (35), told police he had dinner with the family on Wednesday night before retiring to his room.

Singh had been under mental stress for nearly a month over an undisclosed issue and had largely stopped stepping out of the house during this period, according to relatives. Ram Sanehi Ghat station house officer Dayashankar Dwivedi said Singh had left his room during the night and sustained a gunshot injury in the verandah. “Further action will be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report and findings of the investigation,” Dwivedi said. Police said the body was sent for post-mortem examination and the investigation was underway.

Singh had been associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasangh for around five years and held the post of state vice-president.
