Madurai : Madras high court dismissed a plea seeking formulation of a uniform policy guaranteeing two-day mandatory weekly off for all categories of public and private sector workers across the state. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by S Bhaskar of Dindigul district. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking a direction to the state govt to constitute a high-level expert committee comprising industrial, finance, and management experts to examine the feasibility of his model. He also sought a direction to the authorities to launch a pilot project implementing the mandatory two-day rotational weekly off in major industrial hubs like Chennai and Coimbatore. A division bench of Justice P Velmurugan and Justice K K Ramakrishnan observed that the relief sought was purely the prerogative of the state and only it could take such a policy decision, and dismissed the petition.
