Nagpur: Abujmarh, once the dreaded headquarters of the Maoists, is preparing to witness a historic Diwali. The region, which was earlier dominated by fear, threats and minefields, will now welcome happiness, freedom and light, with Gadchiroli police bringing sweets, gifts, food, festoons and festivities to tribal villages on Sunday.
The celebrations in Abujmarh are a part of Gadchiroli police Diwali Milan programmes planned across 70 police posts in the district as a symbolic victory celebration of the security system over the rebels. The March 31, 2026, deadline set by Union home minister Amit Shah gave fresh momentum to the fight against Maoist insurgency. Because of the strong Maoist presence, “For decades, Abhujmarh remained largely cut off from the outside world.

“Darkness will give way to lamps, fear will give way to joy, and isolation will give way to development,” said SP Gadchiroli M Ramesh. The forests contained hidden camps, training facilities, weapons manufacturing units and underground hideouts,” said a security official. Maoists also laid minefields, planted explosives, constructed booby traps and dug spike pits to prevent security forces from entering their territory, said sources. “In the past, Maoists allegedly forced villagers to supply food, money, logistical assistance and other support,” said an official. “The Diwali Milan programmes are aimed at building trust and strengthening the relationship between police personnel and villagers,” said SP Ramesh. “For Abujmarh, this Diwali will mark the beginning of a new chapter,” said an official.
From Wadsadesai Ganj to Bhamragad, Sironcha, Dhanora and Kurkheda, the celebrations will cover all major talukas. Police personnel will meet tribal residents, exchange Diwali greetings and distribute gifts and festive goodies. The SP is planning to visit the police post at Binagunda in the heart of Abujmarh, which was once an operational base of the Maoist movement in the Dandakaranya region, to celebrate Diwali with tribal families. Sustained operations by Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and other security forces dismantled several important Maoist formations and weakened their strongholds. With the Maoist influence receding, Gadchiroli police now want tribal communities to experience the freedom of celebrating festivals without fear. Surrendered Maoists too will participate in the celebrations and be welcomed at Gadchiroli police headquarters. Download the TOI App.
